Great Free Advertising with your own Blog

A friend of mine must asked me what her best choice for free advertising on the Internet would be. I had to think about that for a while. She is not an Internet wizard, but she can use email effectively, she is a good typist, and she has a wealth of knowledge about a number of subjects. My suggestion for her was to create a blog.

Blogging is easy. If you know how to use email, you can create and maintain a blog. Blogger is my blogging platform of choice for a number of reasons. Blogger is free, it is easy to use, and in my experience, Blogger posts automatically rank high in Google searches. Google owns Blogger and they deny that that Blogger blogs get any special treatment, but I know differently. I have created a couple blogs with Blogger and almost every post shows up in the first three pages of Google searches within days, and sometimes within hours of being posted.

All you need to start a blog is an account on Google. You can register for a free Gmail account then just go to Blogger.com and start your blog. Here are a few things you should consider when starting your blog:

Choose a subject that will be of interest to the people that you ultimately want to target with your advertising. That is called targeted marketing. It is much easier to sell something to someone who is looking for a similar product than it is to the thousands of other people that don't already have an interest in the product, service, or opportunity.

Choose a subject that you already know a lot about. Even if you don't think of yourself as a writer, it is very easy to write about things you know and are passionate about. Conversely, it is very hard to write about subjects you don't already know about. Leave that to the journalists that have to research everything they write about in great detail. That doesn't mean you need to know everything about the subject. Once you get started you can learn along the way and write about the new things you have learned. That is exactly what I am doing with this blog you are reading now.

Choose a good title for your blog. It should contain some of the primary "search words" that are interested in being found by when people do Internet searches. The title should also capture the essence of what the blog is about and be somewhat catchy and memorable.

That should get you started. You won't have immediate advertising results, but over time, if you have good content, you will get traffic and good advertising opportunities on your own blog. Good luck and have fun!
